Every IT department wants standardization and order. VM administrators are no different. One of the key things they focus on standardizing is the VM naming convention. Pretty much in most large organizations there is a clean standard VM naming convention. Some of the most popular ones that I have seen are “[location][dcname][servername][dept]” and “[dcname][rackname][servername][role][number]”. This is great from a VM admins point of view. One stark thing that is missing from a business perspective is the applications. At the end of the day shouldn’t the business also care about the Apps?
Pretty much every time when I get to talk with admins, I ask how many of them have a strict naming convention. And no surprise, yes is the unanimous response. When I ask how many of them embed application names in them, the answer is only 5% though. Even if customers embed applications names, it might not be a good idea because the names are static and environments are dynamic. When I ask if they can say that 100% of the VMs in their environment follow the strict naming convention, the answer is almost always no. This is the case because there are always the rogue admins or emergency situations where you need to go ahead and eliminate established rules.
When we started to develop HYCU, purpose-built backup for Nutanix, these are some of the challenges we wanted to eliminate for customers:
- Shouldn’t the system be smart about telling the customer what applications are running in their environment?
- Shouldn’t the customer not have to worry about the name of their VMs?

Nutanix does a great job with Prism to manage all of the VMs regardless of which hypervisor the customer is using. HYCU leverages Prism to keep in sync with all of the VMs that are present in the environment. The integration is dynamic and thus any addition, deletion or updates are picked up by HYCU.
Before we do a backup, the first step we need to do is to make sure the VMs are transparent and we figure out what Applications are running and this is where HYCU’s patent-pending Application-Awareness℠ technology comes in handy. All the customer has to provide is a basic set of credentials for the VM and HYCU will quickly start discovering what is running inside the VMs. VM admins who traditionally managed the VMs like black boxes right now find it refreshing to know what apps they are hosting and where.
